Semenov Gorge
Near the resort town of Cholpon-Ata, located on the northern coast of Issyk-Kul, there are several attractions that are not passed by any tourist. One of them is the famous Semenov Gorge.
Semenov Gorge is located 40 kilometers from Cholpon-Ata, not far from the village Semenovka. The gorge has natural landscapes of extraordinary beauty and was named after the scientist P. P. Semenov-Tien-Shansky, who explored the mountains of Tien-Shan in the middle of the XIX century. Semenov Gorge stretches for 30 kilometers going deep into the Kungei-Alatoo range. The gorge’s valley is cut by the Ak-Suu river, that carries the purest glacial water. The sprawling age-old spruce forest with huge Tien Shan firs covers the surrounding slopes. The rocks are blanketed with thickets of bushes: sea buckthorn, wild rose, barberry, honeysuckle, and currant. In the spring, during flowering, this whole bouquet of different smells merges into a single unforgettable scent.
In the summer, a yurt camp is pitched in the Semenov Gorge. Tourists occupy part of the yurts, as several families who organize holidays take the rest. Here you can taste the national Kyrgyz dishes, listen to national music and enjoy horseback riding through the gorge.
Not far from the Semenov Gorge, there are several cozy houses of the “Chernobyl” health-improving center. This place is popular among athletes who often come here for training camps. Height and fresh air are ideal for training.
