Ala Archa National Park
Picturesque Tian Shan Mountains: hiking, trekking, climbing
Ala Archa is a fantastically beautiful mountainous area in Kyrgyzstan 40 km from the country’s capital Bishkek. Primordial landscapes with diverse conifer species, gorges, glaciers, rocks and waterfalls await those who decide to visit the Ala-Archa National Park.
The Ala-Archa National Park (translates as ‘the bright juniper’) 2,280 ha in area was founded in a gorge with the same name in 1976. The park is located on the northern slope of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range at altitudes between 1,600 m and 4,875 m and stretches north of the highest central portion of the range through to the Ala-Archa Gorge.
Since 1951 the territory has been widely used for various outdoor activities, such as climbing, hiking and trekking. The area features around 150 climbing and trekking routes of all grades, from 1B to 6A inclusively.
The Ala-Archa Base Camp (mountaineering camp) situated at an altitude of 2,100 m is highly popular across the former USSR countries, with climbers visiting the place throughout the year.
The most frequented objects are the Ak-Sai Glacier and Ak-Sai Waterfall. The place also boasts a few summits, such as Dvurogaya (4,380 m), Korona (4,860 m) and the highest point of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range – Semenov-Tien-Shansky Peak (4,875 м).
Ala-Archa abounds in picturesque slopes excellent for training in rock and ice climbing. The highly popular Racek Hut (Ratzek Place) where almost all mountaineers stay to warm themselves can be found at an altitude of 3,400 m, 1- to 3-hour walk from any of the surrounding peaks.
