Aksu Peak
The rocky kingdom of the Lyailak gorge in the Pamir-Alai mountains
Aksu Peak (5355 m) is a grand rocky peak, one of the former USSR main “super walls”, located within Lyailyak gorge, in the Pamir-Alay mountains (Turkestan range, Kyrgyzstan).
This area is famous as one of the most difficult and interesting for rock climbing and wall climbing. In total, in the Lyaylyak gorge there are 5 five-thousand meters with steep rock walls up to 1500 m high, with about 40 routes of the 5th and 6th categories of difficulty are laid through:
- Admiralteets Peak (5090 m);
- Iskander Peak (5120 m);
- Block Peak (5239 m);
- Sabah Peak (5300 m);
- Aksu Peak (5355 m).
Technically, Aksu peak is the most difficult of them. More than five routes of the highest category of difficulty - 6B (Big Wall) are going through the 1.5 kilometer North Wall of Aksu. Here was the place where USSR strongest mountaineers gathered for various championships, and the best athletes from all over the world still come here to test their strength.
However, not only climbers and alpinists know the area, but also fans of trekking along beautiful and easy paths around rocky giants. Lyailyak and Karavshin gorges are very picturesque, the local landscapes resemble South American Patagonia, though the climate in Asia is warmer and more comfortable for long hikes.
