Khan-Shatyr
The main shopping and entertainment centre in Astana
Khan-Shatyr (“Khan among the tents”) is another symbol of the capital of Kazakhstan, a giant shopping and entertainment centre in Astana (Astana), setting a record as the largest tent in the world.
Khan-Shatyr was designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster and built as an ultra-modern tent: on the steel cables, stretching from the foundation to a 150-meter spire, sheets of the most durable polymer hi-tech material are fixed. Khan-Shatyr is reliably protected from the strongest winds and sharp changes of temperature which characterize the capital of Kazakhstan. Due to the ability of the polymer panels to transmit sunlight, a comfortable microclimate is created inside for visitors: up to +30 in the main hall and up to +24 in the departments.
Khan-Shatyr is presented as the first life-style centre in Astana, offering visitors shopping and entertainment in one place.
In the mall, at the territory of 127,000 square meters there are 197 stores, as well as 34 cafes and restaurants. There are gyms, a cinema, as well as a beach resort, where a temperature of +35 degrees is maintained year-round, and the sand for the beach was brought from the Maldives.
Khan-Shatyr is the only architectural building in the CIS countries that Forbes Style magazine has included in the top 10 ecological buildings in the world.
Khan-Shatyr was built within four years (2006 - 2010), and its opening was scheduled to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the First President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. For the anniversary, high-ranking guests from all over the CIS countries were invited to Khan-Shatyr. On the first day there was a concert of the famous opera tenor Andrea Bocelli.
