Magnificent gorges, mineral springs, and ancient rock art await near Osh

Kyrgyz-Ata National Park is nestled in southern Kyrgyzstan, just 40 km from the city of Osh in the Naokat District of the Osh Region. Set on the northern slopes of the Alay Range at elevations between 2000 and 2400 meters, this expansive park covers an impressive 11,172 hectares and is only about a two-hour drive from Osh.

Established in 1992, the Kyrgyz-Ata State Nature Park was created to preserve and restore its stunning arch forests, wild mountain tulips, and saffron that thrive in the basin of the river sharing its name, which cascades down from the northern slopes of the Kichik-Alay Range. The valley of the Kyrgyz-Ata River is encircled by youthful, sharply pointed peaks and sheer cliffs dappled with vibrant splashes of marble.

The park is a treasure trove of natural beauty and history—with vast stands of arch forests, narrow deep canyons, and colorful gorges like Karakoy, Kaldai, and Mazar, alongside mineral springs such as Tuya-Moyun and Eski-Naokat, not to mention caves, ancient settlements, burial mounds, and the famed Naokat rock art.

Today, eco-tourism is booming in the region. Travelers can enjoy day-long hikes or horseback rides through these picturesque gorges, often punctuated with visits to historical landmarks. Plus, trekking in Kyrgyz-Ata offers a fantastic, accessible way to warm up and gently acclimatize before heading into the high altitudes of the Pamirs—especially if you're planning a trip to the Lenin Peak Base Camp.
