Kosh-Madrasah

Kosh-madrasahThe Kosh-madrasah (‘double madrasah’) in Bukhara (Uzbek: Bukhoro or Buxoro; also spelled Buchara, Bokhara, Buhara) is a complex of two 16th-century madrasahs situated on one axis and facing each other. The Abdullah Khan and Modari Khan Madrasahs form a typical Central Asian ensemble built by order of Abdullah Khan to become one of the best educational institutions in Bukhara at the time.

The Modari Khan Madrasah is smaller and older than the Abdullah Khan Madrasah. The construction date, 1566, is immortalised in verses inscribed in majolica above the entrance. The main façade is richly decorated with many-coloured mosaics. The madrasah was a typical higher school and consisted of rows of hujras (‘cells’) for students and teachers, classrooms (darskhana) and a public mosque.

Abdullah Khan Madrasah (1588-1590 гг.) is an imposing structure, the third largest madrasah in Bukhara after Kukeldash and Miri-Arab. The central facade includes a high portal amply decorated with many-coloured majolica tiles.
