Following in the tracks of the past season Lenin Peak 2006

The summer is over…

The end of the season approached unexpectedly. Pamir Autumn came. More and more often it was snowing, less sun shining. By the way, about the weather of Pamir Summer 2006. There were many gladness’ and successful climbers. But let’s step by step.

First, I want to note even the wisest and most experienced local old-timers don’t remember such perfect summer weather. The weather was fine, clear and almost without snow, it became corrupted only in the very end of August. But those who really wanted to climb the summit had time for doing it successfully. A month of clear weather is the best present for many beginners and professional mountaineers. But it is the only one side, what’s the reverse of the medal? May be the reason is that global warming?.. At the beginning of season there was an earthquake and heavy hurricane at Lenin Peak. Dozens of tents were torn and taken away by strong wind squall. Even big yurts didn’t endure such awesome disaster and began fall in just like houses of cards.
Thank God, everything turned out all right and without any human victims. But then there was startling calm, from that each of us expected sudden dirty trick. The earthquake and warm weather make their deed and the way from base Camp (3800 m) to Camp I (4400 m) along Lenin Glacier became impossible. The crevices became too huge and deep and increased day from day.

But new way, which was much safer than the old one was find out very fast. Now you can get Camp I walking along usual rocky path which is parallel to the last year"s one along Lenin Glacier. But there is a possibility that Camp I (4400 m) might be in quite another place in 2007. The reason is intrinsic activity of glacier. In other words the glacier is becoming uneven and cracked. Those who was in Camp I in 2006 certainly noticed extraordinary uneven surface of camp’s territory. Knolls and hollows are ample evidence of future large fissures. It would be enough to say that in 203 Camp I placed on the altitude of 4200 meters. In a year that place of moraine was vastly cracked and Camp I moved to the altitude of 4400 m. Most likely the Camp should be removed again.

There was once more pleasant event of this season. According to last 10 years statistics about two people a year are dying on Lenin Peak. Since 2006 season that bad statistics has been invalid – nobody was seriously suffered or perished. Last summer we had many good news!

This season Lenin Peak was visited by two keen journalists. One of them was Lena Dmitrenko from “Risk on site” journal (Moscow). She was a sociable and companionable lucky bargee who managed not only to keep her eyes on the mountain, but also celebrate birthday at the altitude of 4400 m! The second curious guest-journalist was Tatyana Litvinenko from Uzbek TV (UzTv1, inform program “Akhborot”). During short time of being there she made a film about life of camps and climbing of the seven-thousand peak.

In the base camps of “Asia Travel” pleasant innovations also appeared. Particularly, on the “Lukovaya Glade” we placed volley-ball playground. This place is ideal for organizing of volley-ball games including international games.

You will discover the second original innovation like single national yurt decorated in the manner of the best Kyrgyz traditions where you taste a dinner cooked specially for you. The dinner in this yurt let you feel like Kyrgyz and will leave in your soul a small part of Kyrgyz culture.

In closing some words about successful climbers. Thank to them last season was accepted as record with the number of ascents. From 165 comers 53 persons did it successfully! It is a record of last years!

By the way, shortly before our visit to Lenin Peak Tajikistan government had renamed this peak to “Peak Nezavisimosti” (“Peak of Independence”). But Kyrgyzstan government kept old name. Now this peak has two names!
