Video: Ferghana Kurpacha Mattress

Uzbek Customs, Rites and Traditions

A kurpacha (also kurpa) is a traditional Uzbek quilt mattress with cotton wool padding. It is spread mainly on the floor for sleeping and sitting on, and is also used as a blanket. Integral to Central Asian life style, it has always been an article of daily use of the Uzbeks, a part of an Uzbek home decoration and even a sign of a family’s income. In the village Yangikurgan, Ferghana Valley, Uzbekistan, they carefully preserve the traditional handicraft of making these mattresses. The most expensive of them come with their upper sides made of the famous Uzbek khan-atlas satin.
